Since the Summer of 2004, ACE has been offering a new perspective on the historical study of Ancient Coins, and ACE Teachers were given access to the documents in this folder which contain numerous ideas as to activities, terminology, and what could be included in relation to other artifacts, etc – including of course how to build an Archaeological Simulation. This proved such a fascinating exercise, with some wonderful research by Cathy Scaife who also presented it at the American Numismatic Association summer seminar, that we got carried away and we kept adding extra things to it….. the result follows…….
You will find in the following Parts I thru IV that ACE has prepared an ARCHAEOLOGY UNIT for you to study and draw ideas from, with lots of suggestions for artifacts, other than ancient coins, that you can include in your simulation. Along with these ideas comes background material on archaeological methods, types of finds common to excavations in the Mediterranean, and links to websites full of wonderful images to fascinate your students. You will find ideas for class discussions and a list of hands-on, creative activities that will give students a better appreciation of objects of daily use in Greek and Roman life. The ACE Archaeological Simulation project covers so many different fields; and besides the descriptive documents posted here in PDF format on the site for you to download and study, we have other help under different sub-sections to enable a teacher to provide a genuine historical background to enrich the learning experience for students.
About the coins . . . when ACE acquires uncleaned coins, there are always some that do not fit ACE's criteria for classroom lots. They may be outside of the time period for which ACE has provided support resources, too heavily encrusted with mineral deposits, interesting coins but bear too little image for amateurs to attribute. On the other hand, they are authentic, a few older than the average 4th Century ACE coins, a few larger than students normally get to handle, typical of what archaeologists find, and fascinating in their own right!
So, ACE decided to use these coins in a creative manner by supplying them to teachers for the start of an Archaeology Simulation project. The coins are meant to be handled freely by students, maybe they will be accidently scraped by a trowel,and some items will be buried in dirt and sand year after year as the teacher chooses to do the archaeology project. You will NOT be able to attribute the coins precisely, but should be able to identify broad categories of many of the coins. So, read through / print out the following PDF documents which give you literally chapter and verse on how to set up an Archaeological Simulation project at various levels, from totally encompassing for older students, to a simple "dig" for Elementary students. This a marvellous experience and a wonderful opportunity for your students to learn and have fun doing it.
